Course Outline - Fall 2020

Welcome to Dr. Earley's online Chemistry in Our World course. Students enrolled in this class should proceed sequentially through each of the topics listed below by the deadlines indicated.  Note that some of this material is also available to students who are not currently enrolled but may be interested in finding out more about this course.

This class was originally scheduled to be taught as a hybrid class with face-to-face instruction twice a week. However, this course has been changed to a fully remote class. The current plan is that we will have weekly online sessions using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, which will be optional. The primary source of information for this class will be your textbook and this website.


  • Discussion Board
    You are required to make at least 10 posts (100 word minimum) during the semester. Prompts containing topics for these posts will be posted near the beginning of most weeks.

You will need to complete the quizzes in each of the following sections before the deadlines listed. All of these sections should be completed before the final exam. This section focuses on topics related to biochemistry, with an emphasis on food.

  • Water - Properties of solution and purification of drinking water. Deadline: Nov. 14
  • Oxidation/Reduction - How redox reactions are used both in batteries and metabolism. Deadline: Nov. 21
  • Food Chemistry - Overview of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and diet. Deadline: Nov. 30
  • DNA - Overview of DNA, RNA, and genetics. Deadline: Dec. 7
  • Review Sheet - Summary of topics covered on the last exam.
